"Your grades should be good, because the people admissions is comparing you to will also have good grades, but only having good grades will not make you stand out."

What exams did you give in order to get admission in Stanford? —Ria

For college applications you need to take either the SAT or the ACT, and some schools also ask for Subject SATs.

Could you tell us information about scholarships? Or what universities can offers us scholarships? —Maria

There are countless universities that offer scholarships, though the way in which you apply for scholarships depends on the university. Personally, all the schools I applied to offered financial aid through FAFSA and the CSS Profile, with additional options to apply for merit scholarships. Some universities ask that you submit a separate application for merit scholarships, while some just use your Common Application to award merit scholarships.

How many leadership positions should you have in clubs/student organizations? —Faisal

I don’t think you should aim for a specific number of leadership positions, but each leadership position you have should be a reflection of the passion and commitment you have for the club.

I loved your essay, and as I’m an aspiring writer I would like to ask how you became editor of a lit mag and how I could possibly apply as a sophomore/junior? Also, do you happen to know if sibling legacy applies to undergraduate admissions? —Cara

Thank you so much! On becoming an editor, I’d say first take a look at some of your favorite online literary magazines. So for me, I really liked Polyphony HS. Then look at their website and check out what their editor application process looks like. For Polyphony HS, they had me send them an email. Then if they’re looking for an editor, they’ll be in touch with you with the next steps.

I️ didn’t get the best grades in freshman year, even a couple Bs. How do I️ cope with this? —Induja

I can definitely relate to that! Even in junior year I received B’s throughout the year. So as long as you’re learning and understanding the material in your classes, I wouldn’t worry about it, especially if you’re still in freshman year!

What do you feel would be a great way to engage into our communities and what do you feel is the most important part in the admissions process? Is there any community service recommendations you could give? —Angie

I think when considering ways to engage in your community, you should think about what causes matter to you the most. When I was in high school, I joined my school’s Women’s Forum, because I was passionate about gender equality, and I feel like caring about the cause really allowed me to make an impact.

I’d like to study abroad (UK possibly) but I’m from Italy and here the schools here don’t offer extracurricular activities. So my question is, what can I do to improve my application? —Giulia

First, I would recommend writing a note in the additional information section of your Common Application telling universities about the fact that your school doesn’t offer extracurricular activities. But I would also recommend pursuing  activities on your own time! They don’t need to be school-affiliated clubs, but if you like to write, you can write on your own. If you like art, you can draw on your own. If you like science, you can try pursuing research. All of these independent activities will definitely enhance your application as well!

How important are AP and Honors classes? Because I have only taken 1 AP and 1 Honors. I have a 3.81 GPA but, I believe I have an intellectual vitality as I am self-taught in programming, I speak 3 languages and love philosophy. —Jibraan

Admissions will take into consideration the number of honors and AP classes your school made available to you, so if honors Physics and AP Computer Science are the only honors and AP classes your school offers, they will understand.

What are the best things about Stanford, in your opinion? Why would you rather be there, than in any other university? —Julia

I think by far the best thing about Stanford has been the people I’ve met here. They all come from such different places and have such different perspectives of the world, and I think that has really challenged and taught me a lot, both about myself and about the world at large.

How is the meme culture at Stanford? —Chinua

The meme culture is okay, but definitely not as good as Berkeley’s.
