Yale Young Global Scholars Program with YYGS-Beijing

The Yale Young Global Scholars Program (YYGS) is a summer academic enrichment and leadership program that brings together outstanding high school students from around the world for intensive two-week sessions on Yale’s campus in New Haven and the Yale Center Beijing in China.

On the 10th of October 2017, Timothy Liu, Asia Program Manager and Melissa Dwelley, Communications Officer at YYGS, hosted a live 30 minute Q&A session on Goodwall talking about the YYGS Beijing program. The session was joined by 157 students from around the world.

How much does the program cost? —Achala

Tuition costs 6,000 USD, but we offer need-based financial aid to students.

How selective is the program? —Alizeh

The program is very selective! Last year, we had over 5,000 applicants and admitted roughly 1,500 students.

Can we apply for both YYGS and YYGs-Beijing? —Alzahraa

You can apply to multiple sessions, but you can only attend one! On the application you will have the opportunity to rank your session preferences.

How we can apply for scholarships? —Nangyalai

You can apply for need-based financial aid using our online application. To apply for scholarship (and need-based financial aid) you would just fill out an additional financial aid application. This application can be found in the YYGS application – just check off ‘yes’ when you are asked if you would like to apply for financial aid. You will be asked to provide detailed information and documentation on your household finances.

What are the needed requirements in able to join the program? —Adrian

To apply to the program you would need to fill out an application online. As part of the application, you will need to provide contact information for two people to give you letters of recommendation, complete one long essay and 2 short essays, and provide a list of extracurricular activities.

What is the duration of this program? —Waqas

The program takes place between late June and early August for Summer 2018. The specific session dates are listed on our website.

Do you have to know Chinese to apply? —Ariadna

You do not need to know Chinese to participate in the YYGS-Beijing program.

Applied Science & Engineering (ASE)
June 17 – June 30, 2018
For students who want to explore the application of physical & computer sciences and engineering.
International Affairs & Security (IAS)

June 17 – June 30, 2018
For students with interests in international relations and security and learning historical lessons about leadership.

Frontiers of Science & Technology (FST)
July 8 – July 21, 2018
For students interested in exploring cutting-edge developments in the physical sciences and technology.

Sustainable Development & Social Entrepreneurship (SDSE)
July 8 – July 21, 2018
For students who are interested in exploring innovative solutions to the world’s greatest challenges facing our people and the planet.

Politics, Law, & Economics (PLE)
July 27 – August 9, 2018
For students with interests in understanding American legal principles, economic ideas, and values and practices of government in historical and comparative perspectives.

Biological & Biomedical Science (BBS)
July 27 – August 9, 2018
For students who want to delve deeper into the study and application of life sciences.


YYGS-Beijing: Asia in the 21st Century (ATC)
July 26 – August 8, 2018
For students interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the unique economic, development, and security challenges within the Asia region.

What is the difference between the program in Beijing and the one in New haven? Are the applications the same? —Wei

The program in Beijing is much smaller – it only accepts 90 students. The New Haven sessions are much larger and admit roughly 150 students. The theme of the Beijing session is “Asia in the 21st Century,” and students will have the opportunity to visit local cultural sites to supplement their learning.

Are we required to have done SAT? —Alzahraa

While we encourage students to submit SAT scores, they are not a requirement.

What is the age requirement, are international students accepted, and finally what is the cost of the entire session? —Gurpreet

The YYGS program is open to students, typically between the ages of 15 and 17, who have one or two years of high school to complete after they attend the program. Applicants must be in US Grade 10 or US Grade 11 (or the international equivalent) at the time of application. YYGS accepts applicants from ALL countries.

Will the session be fully funded for international students? —Jack

No the YYGS sessions are not fully funded, there is a tuition of $6,000. However, there is financial aid available for those in need.

Do I have to prove that I speak English? For example, do I have to show my grades on TOEFL or something? —Melissa

We do not require any English proficiency testing, but if English is not your native language then we do recommend submitting any English proficiency scores that you might have.

So does this mean I can't participate if I'm 18? —Nouhe

Unfortunately, students who are 18-years-old at the time of application are ineligible to apply.

What can I do for be accepted into the YYGS program? —Tugce

We review applications holistically, so we are interested to see your academic and extracurricular achievements, your interest in the session itself, letters of recommendation, etc.

Do you have any program in Yale for Filmmaking or sienna studies? —Cemal

Yale Young Global Scholars does not have a program for Filmmaking or sienna studies.

Does submitting language proficiency tests add value to the application? —Teabsira

You are more than welcome to submit a language proficiency test, but you do not need to register for one.

Doesn't seem feasible to adequately cover any of those topics in under a month. What will this program offer as for intellectual and scholarly development? —Zev

YYGS aims to expose students to a wide variety of topics inside these larger themes. We do not aim for students to master all of the specific content that they are introduced to but hope that they discover something that they didn’t know they were interested in before and want to pursue. In addition, our curriculum is focused on helping students develop critical thinking and analysis skills that will be helpful in whatever field they do pursue.

Is there a minimum gpa requirement? —Yeabsira

No, there is no minimum GPA requirement.

Am I eligible to apply for this program if I participated in another exchange program in the US last year? —Alzahraa

Yes, you may still participate in the YYGS program even if you have participated in other exchange opportunities.

What are some favorite student activities in Beijing? —Vijay

In Beijing students will have the opportunity to visit some of the most significant cultural sites around the city, including the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, and Tiananmen Square.

What are some of the activities included in the program? —Regina

A day in the program usually includes a faculty lecture taught by a Yale professor, seminars led by undergraduate and graduate students, and interactive workshops and classes to develop writing, research, and presentation skills.

What is the most important part of the application? —Yeabsira

While all aspects of the application are equally important, the application essays are an important way to show us a side of yourself that other parts of the application cannot.

Do the lessons last all week including weekends? —Regina

Lessons continue on the weekends too, although there is some free time for students to relax and explore.

How many international students are chosen? —Huyen

We do not have a specific number of international students that we admit each year, but historically international students have made up around 45% of our student body.

When is the deadline once the application goes live? —Nangyalai

Once the application is accessible online, the deadline to apply is February 6, 2018.

When will the acceptance results be announced? —Yeabsira

Admissions decisions will be released in late March.

Can a 13 year old in grade 8 this year from an IB school join this program? —Carol

Our sessions are academically rigorous, and focus on a range of topics, like Politics, Law & Economics, Sustainable Development & Social Entrepreneurship, Applied Science & Engineering, etc. We currently do not offer sessions on acting or business.
